Farming by Satellite competition by European GNSS Agency, European Environment Agency & sponsored by CLAAS now accepts entries from across Europe

LONDON, Mar-14-2018 — /EuropaWire/ — The ‘Farming by Satellite Prize’ has a top prize of €5,000 and asks the question: “How can we use satellite technologies to improve agriculture and reduce environmental impact?”.

Dr Andrew Speedy, Chair of Judges, said: “We’re looking for new ideas and innovations, particularly those relying upon Europe’s satellite navigation services EGNOS, Galileo and the European Earth Observation programme, Copernicus. What’s different this year is that students and young professionals are invited to complete their projects in the summer vacation. We’re anticipating submissions featuring hot topics like Big Data, augmented reality, farming 4.0, artificial intelligence and more!”

Finalists will be invited to a major event for the judging and awards ceremony, with all expenses paid. In the past, this has been at the SIMA agricultural show in Paris, a Space Solutions conference in Prague and most recently, International Green Week in Berlin. A similar venue is being arranged for late 2018.

The competition is an initiative of the European GNSS Agency and the European Environment Agency, and is sponsored by CLAAS, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of agricultural machinery. The aim of the prize is to promote Europe’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Earth Observation (EO) services in agriculture.

SES And Samsung Unveil Africa’s First TV With Integrated Free-To-Air Satellite Receiver

SES (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announced at the Samsung Africa Forum in Cape Town, South Africa, that it is collaborating with Samsung to drive digital broadcasting via satellite in sub-Saharan Africa. Samsung will introduce an LED television with an integrated free-to-air satellite receiver, the Samsung LED TV Free Satellite, that will be distributed in Nigeria, Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon in August 2012. Distribution to additional countries will follow.

The integrated satellite receiver will allow consumers to receive free-to-air television channels without the need for an additional set top box as the LED TV will be directly connected with the satellite dish. In preparation for the launch, SES and Samsung will jointly arrange training sessions with distribution partners and installers to ensure the proper connection of the TV device to the satellite dish. Both partners will also run a joint marketing campaign in June 2012.

As a leader in the free-to-air digital TV market, SES delivers more than 60 free-to-air channels in more than 40 African countries. The launch of the new Samsung LED TV Free Satellite coincides with more channels becoming available in Africa.

50th SES Spacecraft In Orbit After Successful ILS Proton Launch

SES S.A. (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) has announced that the SES-4 satellite roared into space on board an ILS Proton Breeze M booster. After a 9-hour, 12-minute mission, the Breeze M upper stage of the Proton rocket successfully released the SES-4 satellite directly into geostationary transfer orbit.

SES-4 is a 20-kilowatt satellite manufactured on the flight-proven Space Systems/Loral 1300 platform with 52 C-band and 72 Ku-band transponders. It has C-band beams serving the eastern hemisphere of Europe and Africa, full coverage of the Americas, and a global beam to support mobile and maritime customers. Four high-power, regional Ku-band beams provide service to Europe, the Middle East, West Africa, as well as North and South America with extensive channel switching capability between C- and Ku-band transponders for enhanced connectivity.

SES-4 is the 50th satellite in the global SES fleet and also the largest, most powerful SES satellite to date. It will replace the NSS-7 satellite at 338 degrees East longitude and provide replacement as well as incremental capacity at this well established SES orbital slot over the Atlantic Ocean.
